Don't Email While Driving - Avoid Distracted Driving Accidents

There has been a lot of news about the dangers of talking on a phone while driving. Last summer the legislature passed a law requiring drivers to use hands-free devices while on the phone. There is also a ton of news about the teens texting while driving. So that got me wondering - what about emailing with a Blackberry or iPhone while driving?

Not surprisingly, there is a law against that, too. California Vehicle Code section 23123.5 provides that "A person shall not drive a motor vehicle while using an electronic wireless communications device to write, send, or read a text-based communication." So basically, you may not text or email while driving.

However, you are allowed to read, select, or enter "a telephone number or name in an electronic wireless communications device for the purpose of making or receiving a telephone call . . ." So you can apparently still use your Blackberry or iPhone so long as you are using it only to enter a name or number. However, driver still have to drive safely and be able to react properly to conditions around them.
